Spotlit — Privacy Policy

Summary

Spotlit runs entirely inside your browser. Your recordings, screenshots, and everything captured during a recording or guide session are stored locally on your own device. Spotlit does not send them to us, and does not send them to any third-party server. We have no user accounts, no analytics, and no advertising or tracking.

This policy explains what Spotlit (the “extension”, “we”, “us”) accesses, why, and where that data lives. It applies to the Spotlit Chrome extension.

What Spotlit accesses

Depending on which feature you use, Spotlit may access:

Screen content — the screen, window, or tab you choose to record, when you start a screen recording.
Camera and microphone — only if you turn on face cam and/or microphone before recording. If you leave them off, they are never accessed.
Page content and activity during capture — while a recording or guide capture is running on a page, Spotlit reads the clicks, typing, and scrolling you perform, and takes screenshots of the relevant elements, in order to build automatic zooms (for video) or numbered steps (for guides).
The web address of pages you capture — used to label steps (for example, a “Visit …” step) and to return focus to your original tab.

Spotlit only accesses these things while you are actively recording or capturing. It does not monitor your browsing at other times.

Where your data is stored

All captured data is stored locally in your browser, using standard browser storage:

Recorded video, camera clips, screenshots, the activity log, and your edits are stored in your browser’s IndexedDB on your device.
Temporary session state and your preferences (such as your last mic/camera choice) are stored in the browser’s extension storage on your device.

None of this is transmitted to us or to any third party. There is no Spotlit server that receives your recordings or captured content. Processing — including the automatic-zoom planning and all editing — happens on your own machine.

What we do not do

We do not create accounts or collect names, emails, or profiles.
We do not use analytics, tracking pixels, or advertising.
We do not sell, rent, or share your data — we never receive it in the first place.
We do not upload your recordings or guides anywhere on your behalf.

Data you choose to share

Some actions send data outward — but only because you initiate them, and only to destinations you control:

Exports and downloads. When you export a video, guide (HTML/Markdown), or images, the file is saved to your device. What you then do with that file — share it, upload it, send it — is entirely up to you.
“Report a problem” feedback. If you use the in-app feedback option, it opens your own email client (or copies text for you to paste) with a short diagnostic report containing technical details such as your browser version, operating system, extension version, current settings, and any recent error message. This report does not include your recordings, camera footage, screenshots, audio, or the contents of fields you typed. Sending it is your choice, and it goes through your own email to us at the address below.

Sensitive information

Because a screen recording or capture can contain whatever is on your screen, please be mindful of what is visible when you record. Spotlit includes some safeguards during guide capture:

Passwords are never recorded as step values.
Values that look like emails, phone numbers, or long digit sequences are flagged as sensitive, and steps can be blurred.

These safeguards help, but they cannot detect everything. You remain in control of what you capture and export.

Permissions we request, and why

Permission	Why Spotlit needs it
`desktopCapture`	To record the screen, window, or tab you select.
Host access (all sites)	Recording and guide capture work on whatever site you choose to use them on; the extension cannot know in advance which site that will be. Access is used only during an active recording or capture.
`scripting` / `tabs`	To run the capture logic on the active page and manage the recording and editor tabs.
`sidePanel`	To show the live step list during guide capture.
`storage`	To store recordings, edits, and preferences locally on your device.
`downloads`	To save your exported videos, guides, and images to your device.

Keeping and deleting your data

Because your data is stored locally, you control it:

Deleting a recording or guide within Spotlit removes it from your browser’s storage.
Clearing your browser’s site/extension data, or uninstalling the extension, removes Spotlit’s locally stored data.

We cannot delete data for you, because we never hold a copy of it.

Children

Spotlit is a general-purpose productivity tool and is not directed to children under 13.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top and post the revised version at this URL. Significant changes will be reflected here before they take effect.
